Restless
For hearts that want more of the Word.
“Thou madest us for Thyself, and our heart is restless, until it repose in Thee.” St Augustine, Confessions I.1, translated by E. B. Pusey, 1838 (public domain)
You’ve heard these readings your whole life. Come and see what’s in them.
Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful,
and kindle in them the fire of your love.
Know the Scriptures, know Christ.
After St Jerome: “Ignorance of the Scriptures is ignorance of Christ” (Dei Verbum 25; Catechism 133).
Every reading in its whole story
Where it falls in its book, who and where, the history around it.
The Church on every reading
The Catechism paragraphs that cite it, and the Fathers on each Gospel.
What stirred you comes back
Your notes are kept with the reading, and return when it is read again at Mass.
Who it is for
Catholics in the United States who want to understand the day's readings before they hear them at Mass, and those on the way to becoming Catholic: inquirers, people in OCIA (the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults, the parish path into the Church), and a husband or wife who comes to Mass with their family. Nothing assumes you already know the words: each one is explained the first time it appears.
What you will find
Prepare for today's Mass and the Hours: what the Church, the Fathers and the bishops' Bible say about each reading, already gathered.
- Each reading in context: the book it comes from, where the passage falls, and the people and places in it.
- The Church's teaching: the paragraphs of the Catechism of the Catholic Church that draw on the reading, linked to the Holy See's text.
- The Fathers of the Church on the Gospel: from the Catena Aurea, Saint Thomas Aquinas's gathering of the Fathers, in the English edition of 1841 to 1845.
- The Liturgy of the Hours explained: what each Hour holds today and why, so you can pray it from your own breviary or app.
- The readings themselves are read at the US bishops' site, bible.usccb.org: every card links to them. This site does not reproduce them.

Your notes stay on your device
Write a note on any reading, on the readings of a day taken together, or on any Hour. Each note is kept with the reading, not the date, so it comes back the next time that reading is heard at Mass. Notes are stored only in your own browser. They are never sent to us and we cannot see them. To keep them safe, or to move them to another device, save a backup file to your own computer from Your notes.
